How to Safely Dispose of Used Vials

Why Proper Disposal Matters
Used medication vials should not be tossed into your regular trash without precautions. Even when "empty," vials can contain trace amounts of medication that should be kept away from children, pets, and anyone who isn't your prescriber.
What You'll Need
- Your used or expired vial(s)
- A sealable plastic bag (a zip-top bag works well)
- A permanent marker
Step-by-Step
1. Confirm the Vial Is Empty
- Hold the vial up to the light and verify there is no remaining liquid
- If there is leftover medication, do not pour it down the sink or toilet — see the section below on liquid medication
2. Deface the Label
- Use a permanent marker to scratch out your name, prescription number, and any other personal information on the label
- This protects your privacy in case the vial is found after disposal
3. Seal the Vial
- Place the empty, defaced vial inside a sealable plastic bag
- You can combine several vials in one bag
4. Dispose with Household Trash
- Once sealed, the bag can go into your regular household trash
- Do not recycle medication vials — most curbside recycling programs do not accept them
If There's Leftover Medication
If a vial still contains liquid medication and you no longer need it:
- Best option: Drop it off at a DEA-authorized take-back location. Find one at https://apps.deadiversion.usdoj.gov/pubdispsearch/spring/main?execution=e1s1
- Alternative: Mix the liquid with an undesirable substance (used coffee grounds, dirt, or cat litter) inside a sealed bag, then place the bag in the trash
- Never flush GLP-1 medications (like semaglutide or tirzepatide) down the toilet or pour them down the sink
